Cuba, India, Singapore, Macau, New Zealand – just some of the places that Dateline has taken David O'Shea this year.

David began working for Dateline in May 1998, during the riotous final days of President Soeharto’s rule. He stayed on as Dateline’s Indonesia correspondent for the next six years, covering East Timor’s dramatic birth and filming numerous profiles and reports from around the archipelago. David has also reported from Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and throughout the Asia Pacific.

As a seasoned journalist, he’s interviewed many rough characters including warlords, rebel leaders, people smugglers and militia leaders. This year was no exception – he filmed and interviewed a juvenile criminal gang in Auckland, as well as members of the feared Mongrel Mob.

In 2006 he received a United Nations Media Peace prize for his story The Spanish Inquisition that detailed torture allegations against the Spanish police. That same year he was caught in the middle of a major gun battle in East Timor and in 2003, just days before Australian peacekeepers arrived in the Solomon Islands to re-establish law and order, he travelled by banana boat to Guadalcanal’s remote Weathercoast to record the first interview with notorious warlord Harold Keke.

David is a three-times Walkley and two-time Logie finalist. His films have been screened at international film festivals and broadcast around the world.

In 2004 he co-produced and presented Dateline's celebrated 20th anniversary special, Many Happy Returns – 20 Years In The Firing Line.
