The Republican ticket for the White House has a head start over the Democrats – at least in terms of hairstyles.

Wig makers in the US are doing brisk business selling wigs based on Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's trademark 'sexy librarian' hairdo.

New York-based Jacquelyn Wigs has been inundated with requests for Palin-inspired tresses.

“A lot of people were asking us about Palin wigs and that's why we decided to make them,” said George Mayer, the company's president.

In Brooklyn, wholesaler Georgie Wigs says its Palin-lookalike wig has become one of the company's most popular items, with about 50 sold since the Alaska Governor joined John McCain's ticket.

The firm, which caters to Orthodox Jewish women who must cover their hair after marriage and to women who need wigs for medical reasons, said more than half of recent clients had come in looking to replicate Palin's unique style.

'Timeless hairstyle'

“At least 50 per cent of my clients are using Sarah Palin as some sort of reference and asking for some portion of her style,” said hair stylist Gail Rosenzweig.

“Whether it be the beehive, without the long bangs, or the long bangs, without the beehive, but at least 50 per cent are using her as some sort of reference fashionwise, because it's such a classy look, because it transfers to any face.”

Palin's hairstyle doesn't come cheap, with synthetic hair wigs selling for $US175 and real hair versions costing anything from $US595 to $US1,650, depending on their quality.

But Mr Mayer is convinced that those who pick Palin's tresses won't be regretting their choice after next week.

Whether or not Palin and Republican presidential candidate John McCain win the election, he said, the VP nominee's hairstyle is timeless and the wig with her name on it “will be around for many years”.

And for those who prefer Democrat Barack Obama's wife Michelle's look, Jacquelyn Wigs is working on a wig based on the would-be First Lady's swept-back style.

“We're finding there's a lot of demand for Michelle Obama's hairstyle among black women,” said Mr Mayer.
